Our process for vercel ai sdk mcp server integration
A fixed four-step path from first call to production, with weekly demos and a hard launch date.
Tool surface design
We define what the server should expose, because an MCP server with forty vague tools performs worse than one with eight well-named ones.
Deliverable
Tool surface spec
Auth & transport
We implement the transport and the auth model, including OAuth where the server is reachable outside your network.
Deliverable
Secured server skeleton
Build & harden
We implement the tools with strict schemas, input validation, and least-privilege access to whatever they touch.
Deliverable
Tested MCP server
Deploy & document
We deploy, document the tool surface for the agents that will consume it, and hand over.

Book your systems auditOverview
Writing custom tool execution logic for every internal database and API is a massive waste of engineering time.
Our Vercel AI SDK MCP Server Integration service connects your applications directly to Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers. This standardizes how your agents read data and execute actions, removing the need for custom glue code and brittle JSON parsers.
Key Capabilities
-
MCP Client Setup
We configure the native@ai-sdk/mcppackage to connect your Next.js or Node applications to any standard MCP server. -
Internal System Standardization
We wrap your proprietary APIs and databases in custom MCP servers, making them instantly available as tools to any SDK-powered agent. -
Secure Protocol Routing
We implement the necessary authentication and network routing to ensure your Vercel Edge functions can securely talk to your internal MCP instances.
Why Partner With Us?
- Decoupled Architecture: By standardizing on MCP, you separate your AI prompt logic from your database connection logic.
- Rapid Scaling: Once a data source is wrapped in an MCP server, we can give any new agent access to it with a single line of code.
- Forward-Looking: We build for the industry standard, ensuring your architecture won't become obsolete when the next generation of models drops.
Stop writing custom tool bindings. Standardize your AI infrastructure with MCP today.

OpenAI Agents API vs a Custom Harness: When the Hosted Beta Is Enough
OpenAI's Agents API public beta (10 September 2026) is a hosted Codex harness with compaction and recovery. Here is when to use it, when to keep your own runtime, and what you give up on day one.
Read itMCP vs Native Tool Calling: Protocol Contracts and Blast Radius at Enterprise Scale
Model-native function calling gets demos running in an afternoon. As soon as you scale to dozens of internal services, non-human identities, and cross-team security boundaries, Model Context Protocol (MCP) becomes an operational necessity.

Input sanitization and system prompt admonitions are useless against indirect prompt injection. Here is how modern security engineers build layered defenses using taint tracking, hardware sandboxes, and deterministic MCP gateways.
Read itCommon questions
What makes an MCP server good rather than merely working?
The tool surface. Models choose tools from names, descriptions, and schemas, so a server exposing forty overlapping tools with terse descriptions produces worse agent behaviour than one exposing eight precise ones. We spend real design time on that surface, and it is usually the difference between an agent that uses your server correctly and one that flails.
How do we secure an MCP server?
If it is reachable outside your network, with OAuth 2.1 and properly validated bearer tokens, which our team has written up in detail on the blog. Beyond auth, the important controls are least-privilege credentials for whatever the tools touch, strict input schemas so a model cannot pass something unexpected into a query, and rate limits per client. Treat every tool input as untrusted, because the model producing it can be steered by content it read earlier.
Does the MCP spec keep changing, and will our server break?
It has changed meaningfully, including the 2026-07-28 revision that removed sessions and the initialize handshake. We build against the current spec and structure the server so a transport-level change does not require rewriting your tool logic. We have published a migration walkthrough for that revision on the blog.
Can an MCP server sit in front of our existing internal APIs?
Yes, and that is the most common build we do. The server becomes a deliberately narrow, well-described facade over systems that already exist, which is safer than exposing the underlying API directly because you control exactly which operations an agent can reach and with what permissions.
