Our process for vercel ai sdk migration
A fixed four-step path from first call to production, with weekly demos and a hard launch date.
Codebase audit
We inventory every SDK call site, identify the breaking changes that actually affect you, and size the work honestly.
Deliverable
Migration plan & effort estimate
Characterisation tests
We add tests around current AI behaviour before changing anything, so we can prove the migration preserved it.
Deliverable
Behaviour test suite
Incremental migration
We migrate in reviewable increments with the test suite green at each step, rather than one large unmergeable change.
Deliverable
Migrated, tested codebase
Verify & hand over
We verify streaming, tool calling, and error paths against the recorded baseline and document what changed.
Deliverable
Verified build & change log

Book your systems auditOverview
If your application is running on an older version of the Vercel AI SDK, or if you built your own fragile API wrappers before the ecosystem matured, you are missing out on major stability and feature improvements.
Our Vercel AI SDK Migration service transitions your codebase to the latest v7 standards, replacing outdated CommonJS and basic wrappers with durable workflows and standardized tooling.
Key Capabilities
-
Version Upgrades
We safely migrate your codebase from v6 (or older) to v7, handling the ESM requirements and breaking API changes. -
Custom Wrapper Replacement
We replace your custom-built, brittle API connection logic with the SDK's nativegenerateTextandstreamTextfunctions. -
Tool & Schema Standardization
We rewrite your custom tool logic to use the SDK's native Zod validation and tool-calling interfaces.
Why Partner With Us?
- Risk Mitigation: We test every endpoint thoroughly during the migration to ensure no regression in model behavior or output formatting.
- Future-Proofing: Moving to the latest standard means you can immediately take advantage of new features like OpenTelemetry and MCP.
- Fast Turnaround: We know exactly where the breaking changes are, allowing us to complete the migration in a fraction of the time it would take an internal team.
Stop maintaining custom AI wrappers. Let us migrate you to the industry standard.
What we've written about this
Teaching an Agent Our Client Reporting Playbook with Vercel AI SDK v7 Skills
Our monthly client reports followed a 40-line prompt nobody dared touch. I moved the whole playbook into an uploaded skill using the new uploadSkill API in Vercel AI SDK v7.
Read itBuilding a Realtime Voice Support Agent with Vercel AI SDK v7
Voice agents used to mean marrying one provider's WebSocket event format. I used the new experimental realtime API in Vercel AI SDK v7 to build an order-status voice agent I can move between providers.
Read itLetting an Agent Run Shell Commands Safely with Vercel AI SDK v7 Sandboxes
I built a dependency-audit agent that runs npm commands on real projects. The new experimental sandbox support in Vercel AI SDK v7 is what made me comfortable shipping it.
Read itCommon questions
What actually breaks when upgrading the AI SDK across a major version?
The signatures are the visible part and usually the easy part. What catches teams out is behavioural: streaming semantics, tool-call shapes, error types, and provider option names change in ways that compile fine and fail at runtime under load. That is why we write characterisation tests around the current behaviour before touching anything, so the migration is verified rather than hoped for.
Can you migrate without a feature freeze?
Usually yes. We work in incremental, reviewable commits against a test suite that stays green, so your team keeps shipping alongside the migration. A single enormous branch that diverges for three weeks is how migrations become permanent, and we avoid that shape deliberately.
How long does a migration take?
Two to three weeks for a typical application, though the honest answer comes from the audit in the first three days, where we count call sites and identify which breaking changes actually touch your code. Applications that wrapped the SDK behind their own abstraction migrate much faster than ones that call it directly from a hundred places.
Is it worth upgrading at all?
Not always, and we will say so. If you are on a supported version, not blocked by a missing capability, and not carrying a security issue, staying put is a legitimate engineering decision. The upgrades worth doing are ones that unlock something specific you need or that close a widening gap that will make the eventual migration worse.
